22 Sep Weekly Roundup 22 September 2019

One of the benefits of being a Penarth and Dinas Runner is the lovely countryside we have locally to exercise in, with beautiful coastal and woodland paths. It’s our playground, but unfortunately it gets a bit untidy sometimes, as other visitors choose not to take their litter home with them. At our last AGM several of our members asked whether, as a group, we could organise a “Litter Pick”…well it took a bit of time, but we eventually got there this weekend! Committee member Danielle Rayner made contact with Tony Spear at Vale of Glamorgan Council, and he kindly supplied us with a kit of parts (pickers, gloves, black bags) to make it happen. We chose to meet at the Captain’s Wife pub next to Sully Beach on Saturday morning, and Dan & I were delighted to be joined by Ali & Terry Reeves, Terry McCarthy, Colin Caesar, Anna Helsing, Mandy Barrington, Trish Cottnam, and three members of the Southwell family.

We were blessed with a beautiful autumnal morning, and most of us returned after an hour with a motley collection of rubbish in our black sacks (I had lots of discarded Irn Bru bottles!). Everyone agreed it was a great exercise, and certainly something we will repeat at other venues in the coming months. Thank you Dan for organising and everyone who turned up on the day.

Back to racing, and we need to recognise some great performances from last weekend first.

We had three participants in the Simplyhealth Great Bristol Half Marathon, led in by a superb run by Gary Brown, who set a PB time of 1:15:02 finishing 21st. This also moved Gary up to 4th in the Club Best Performance list for Half Marathon. Solid efforts also from Ruth Cann (1:42:50 1216th) and Ian Warburton (1:44:03 1342nd).

Meanwhile, over in Tenby Simon ‘Cyrill’ Grant was making his Ironman Wales debut. This is an iconic event that has been running for nine years now, and completely takes over the town and surrounding area for the weekend…highly recommended as a spectator, I can’t vouch for the experience as a competitor! Swim for 2.4 miles in the sea, run through the town to the transition area to pick up your bike. Ride your bike for 112 very hilly miles, then return to transition. Run a 4-lap Marathon, and guess what…it’s very hilly! Finish on the red carpet on the Esplanade cheered in by amazing crowd support. The Pros complete the event in under 9 hours, finishing off with a sub 3 hour marathon…absolutely mental.

Simon approached the event with some solid training under his belt, but a cycling accident earlier in the summer had limited his preparation somewhat. However his debut was a model of consistent, paced effort; swim took 1:27:46, bike 7:38:47, finished off with a marathon in 4:08:18, for a total time of 13:35:05. He started at just after 7 in the morning and finished at 8:47 pm, heroic stuff, well done mate!

Moving on to this weekend, Gary Brown was back in action taking on the Swansea 10k road race….38th in a time of 35:17. Malcolm Bradley was dabbling with the “Dark Side” again, taking on the Steel Valley Triathlon over in Ebbw Vale. Don’t have any definitive results, but Malcolm tells me he was traveling on his bike at unheard-of speeds!

As per normal, Steve New was doing an ultra…this time in Margam Park. Nicked this comment off his Facebook page….

“I’m having a week off! 50th race of the year, 6th ultra & 15th 100 marathon club run (#236 total). A cheeky 30 miles around Margam Park’s beautiful trails with a few hills thrown in. Thanks to Infinity Running…great friendly event as always. Loved it.🌲🌲🌦😁👌🌲🌲”

And then we have the parkrun results from this weekend….great to see a P & D ‘reunion’ down in Tamar Lakes (Devon?) with three “sisters” Lisa Cleary, Debbie Williams and Yvonne Williams getting back together, and (quite possibly!) causing mayhem in the local hostelries. Yvonne as fit as ever with a 74% Age Grade run…chasing after the goats and sheep is obviously keeping her in fine fettle. And congratulations Lisa on your 50th parkrun in a different location.
