01 Sep Weekly Roundup 1st September 2019

This is a bit of a strange occurrence….the Roundup Editor writing a report on the same day that he actually raced. It might be a bit disjointed and befuddled; so no change there then! 😂😂

The weekend started early, with the Annual Club BBQ and “Marathon Miles” Event held in Cosmeston Country Park, after being postponed in July due to inclement weather. It all nearly went a bit pear-shaped, as the advance setup party found our booked BBQ spot already in use by a large party celebrating a birthday. We had to re-muster at the smaller of the two BBQ sites and put out a desperate plea for someone to bring some portable BBQ sets, with the Chairman driving at somewhat dangerous speeds back to Barry to pick up his own portable set. Dan Rayner was our saviour, as she diverted to Morrisons to pick up two kits, and literally saved our bacon (she actually then volunteered to cook the veggie bangers/burgers!) It was great to catch up with friends old and new….lovely to see Clem and Janice Clement who were back in the area for one of their typical weekends, stuffed to the gunnels with running and social activities.

Big thanks to Mandy Barrington for organising the food and encouraging you all to attend, and Lyn Evans (+ laptop) for scheduling the running bit. We actually did run a more accurate distance this year!

As it got dark we were able (just!) to do some medal and award presentations, for Team and individual performance at the Porthcawl 10k, and for “Improver of the Year 2018” to Bethan Apglyn (her original award had an arm that fell off!). Congratulations to Ruth Cann, Beth, Ian Southwell and Melissa Smith. Thanks for bringing your flash, Malcolm Bradley.

We’d also like to offer a big welcome and thanks to Terry and Ali Reeves, the latter being our latest new member, the former being an ex Catering Manager who took over the meat BBQ preparation with assured aplomb and expertise.

We had a couple of First Finishers at parkrun this weekend, and there’s no truth in the rumour that they benefited from the proximity of Sunday’s Cardiff Met 10k! Gary Brown nipped past a couple of Les Croups to score a fine win (ahead of 712) at Cardiff Blackweir, whilst his “cohort” Mike Morgan pulled off a spectacular victory at Barry Island, made even more memorable by the fact that he remembered his barcode 😂😂

Sunday morning turned out to be a beautiful one for running the Cardiff Met 10k Road Race…..sunny, not too warm and a lovely tailwind on the way back to the finish. The cover picture above shows some of our finishers with their race t-shirts and bling, with a few other members captured below before the start. With between 6000 and 7000 competitors, it was quite difficult to all meet up in one place.

Where do I start with some great P&D results? First home for us (yet again) was Ben Butler-Madden, 36th overall in a cracking time of 33:51 (off the back of a very hard training week out in Budapest). This will be Ben’s last race for us in Blue and Yellow as he becomes First Claim with the Ponty Roadents “Black and White Army”…best of luck Ben, we’ll be following your progress with interest. Next in for us was Ian Southwell, finishing 100th in a superb 35:56, and not far behind came Nathan Christoforato (36:49 PB) and a returning Freddie Brown (37:19)

Kevin Chalke just missed out in breaking the 40 minute barrier by finishing in exactly 40 minutes. This was good enough for 8th in M55, which looks like a mightily competitive category to be in. Kev being Kev, he’s now re-calibrated his targets for next year and wants to break 39 minutes! Another PB for Kit Lambert, running a fine 41:37, followed in by more PBs with Beth Apglyn 44:09 and Terry McCarthy 44:55.

Some great Age Category results, with Cath Barker finishing 8th in MW40, Lisa Cleary 5th in MW55, Janice Clement 5th in MW60, Clem Clement 9th in MM60 and Malcolm Bradley 5th in MM65.

Please let me know of any other PBs so I can update this report….Emma Healy ducked under 58 minutes for the first time and I’m fairly sure Debbie Rees smashed it again with a 59:13 clocking. Debbie was rewarded with a post-race canoodle with a Club ex-Chairman! The photo evidence is so shocking it can’t be shared in the public domain 😂😂  Full results here.

I’ve cut and pasted the results here too, but it should also include Matt Webley 2163rd in 55:21 and Andrea Goodfellow who finished 3831st in 65:02.
