09 Feb Weekend Roundup 8-9 February 2020

Cover lad this week is Staggy McDeerface, a new member we recruited at Chepstow Racecourse, the venue for this weekend’s Gwent League XC race – the 4th one in the series. And he wasn’t the only new member out for a gallop around the course…we welcomed Kumiko Southwell making her Blue and Yellow debut at cross country. As you’ll see from her photo below, she’s already got the “P&D Smile while you run” in the bag….

Women’s and MM65 runners were under starter’s orders at 13:00, with the going firm underfoot and a brisk breeze on the drag up to the finish of each lap. It was brilliant to see the two Caths (Barker and Tailby) back on song as our first finishers. Equally impressive was John Davies in the MM65 race, finishing 2nd and now leading the overall rankings by 8 points, with just one more fixture remaining…come on JD, you’ve got this!

Race Results (Women): 71st Catherine Barker 27:40, 81st Cath Tailby 27:59, 112th Lucy Entwhistle 29:10, 139th Lisa Cleary 30:10, 154th Louise Hunt 30:35, 198th Kumiko Southwell 31:52, 216th Sophie Gott, 231st Dan Rayner 33:48.  Team were 4th in Division 2 (now 5th overall)

Race Results (MM65): 2nd John Davies 26:41, 6th Malcolm Bradley 28:33.  Team were 2nd (now 2nd overall)

Before the Men staggered to the start line, we had a few presentations to look after. The Chairman Simon Williamson was able to present Colin Caesar with his Winner’s plaque from the 2019 MM40 Club Championships, and various team medals from the South Wales Regional Champs, which was run in conjunction with the first Gwent League fixture at Cardiff back in October. Really pleasing to award a MM55 Team Bronze to Peter Balmont, who is the out-and-out definition of a loyal cross country runner….

On to the racing action, and great to see Jon Ely back getting his feet (sort of) dirty, for his annual cross country pilgrimage…Jon, there are other fixtures available!

From a personal perspective, it was an interesting race…up the first hill, nearly ran into the back of Kevin Chalke; either he’s having a mare or I’m on a flier…he finished 194th, I was 305th, so no, it was business as usual! Can I hang on to Jonathan and Steven? No. Then I end the first lap, and I’m overtaking Steven, but then realise he’s helping another runner in difficulty…we run together, this is good, P&D train, and he’s bigger than me, I’ll use him to shelter in the wind….until his shoelaces come undone! Run the last lap battling “Kev from Chepstow” (lots of local support), die on the uphill finish, but thankfully Steven doesn’t come past…feel guilty eating his delicious lemon cake. We’ve all got stories to tell in the P&D tent, surely a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon?

Race Results: 33rd Gary Brown 31:43, 80th Ian Southwell 33:23, 176th Jon Ely 36:36, 194th Kevin Chalke 37:12, 246th Colin Caesar 39:11, 255th Brian Law 39:40, 279th Jonathan Irvine 40:42, 305th Simon Williamson 42:14, 310th Steven Barker 42:28, 335th Chris Nellins 44:25 338th Malcolm Bradley 44:35 (2nd race of the afternoon, much respect!), 389th Peter Balmont 58:05.  Team 3rd on the day (6th overall in the series)

Moving on to parkrun action, and those Clements were at it again….travelling to far-flung destinations searching for new Alphabet locations, and this time bagging “Q” about as far away as you could travel, Queenstown on the South Island of New Zealand! Slightly ironic, a new parkrun has just been set up in their hometown (Glasgow) which goes by the name of Queens Park 😂😂 Never mind, it’s a great place to be at this time of year….(and it was their 200th parkrun…..)

Would like to bring you some definitive results from the Brecon to Cardiff Ultra today….a 70 km trail run, which amazingly hadn’t been postponed by Storm Ciara. No official results out there, but the tracking website splurged out this….49th Steve New 5:59:31, 166th Jonathan Salisbury 8:17:16. No idea if these are complete finish times, but I suspect the race was abandoned…updates when I have them!
