08 Dec Weekend Roundup 7-8 December 2019

Our “cover-boy” this week is the ever-smiling Andy Pearce, grinning his way to a fine 2nd place and excellent time of 3:16:25 in the MM50 Age Category at the Lanzarote Marathon on Saturday (more on this later)….Andy earns his top-billing due to my negligence in not recording his fine performance last week. 50 parkruns, all of them at Barry Island, and first past the post in Number 50. Well done that man!

Talking of parkruns, we start this week celebrating the arrival of one of them at our local ‘manor’, Cosmeston Lakes. Lyn Evans is the Event Director and has worked tirelessly in the last few months to make this happen, supported by ‘trainee’ Run Directors Katie Clark and Louise Hunt and numerous other Club members helping out as marshals, volunteers and “runner guinea pigs”; massive thanks to everyone who’s been involved. Lyn had planned for a ‘soft launch’ so as not to impact too much on the park environment, but word of mouth was spectacularly successful, with 207 finishers, and lots of favourable feedback from the field. Here are a few images from the day….

On to the parkrun results, including a fair few of you running this inaugural run at Cossie…strong running by Dave Mathews 5th in 19:18 here, and a great run by Nathan Christoforato, 4th in 17:46 at Cardiff. Special mention also for Paul Whitmarsh, running 26:34 at Barry Island, a massive 3/4 minute improvement on recent runs there…excellent work, Paul!

As mentioned above, we had lots of volunteers at Cosmeston Lakes, and quite a few of them traveled directly to Blaise Castle in Bristol for Round 3 of the Gwent Cross Country League. Here’s the Ladies team (with a rather striking damsel in the back row!), and every one of them ran strongly….99th Lucy Entwhistle (captured below), 99th Cath Barker, 119th Cath Tailby, 151st Louise Hunt, 176th Lisa Cleary, 219th Anna Helsing, 260th Sophie Gott. In the MM65 Race run in conjunction, John Davies (pictured below) stormed through to what we think was 2nd place (68th overall) and Malcolm Bradley completed his first run of the afternoon(!) finishing 131st overall.

Before the Men’s race, we had a special presentation to make…Chris Nellins had won the MM65 Age Category in the South Wales Off-Road Regional Champs at the Rabbit Run earlier in the year, and the Club Chair was delighted to hand over the spoils…

It was another high quality field, so gaining a place anywhere in the top half was a classy run….great to see Freddie Brown debuting at cross country, and Brian Law excelling as a MM60. 33rd Gary Brown, 110th Freddie Brown, 283rd Colin Caesar, 300th Brian Law, 313th Kit Lambert, 340th Steven Barker, 346th Jonathan Irvine, 367th Simon Williamson, 378th Chris Nellins, 386th Terry McCarthy, 401st Malcolm Bradley, 422nd Peter Trott, 456th Peter Balmont.

I don’t have any complete results from the Lanzarote Marathon and Half Marathon apart from Andy Pearce, but congratulations to Ruth Cann and Julie Broughton who completed the Full, and Bev Warburton, Nigel Adams, Debbie Rees, Emma Healy, Mandy Barrington, Tania Miranda and Kath Petersen who completed the Half. Here they all are (minus Nigel, who took the photo) at the finish…

There are some interesting photos appearing on the Lanzarote Group Facebook page but as the saying goes, what happens on tour stays on tour! Thanks to Mandy and Debbie for organizing the logistics.

Finally, some other individual results from the weekend. Steve New completed marathon number 240 (19th of 2019), running across the wilds of Salisbury Plain in a time of 5:48. Bethan Apglyn ran a super-consistent pace to record 44:36 at the Telford 10k, good enough for 596th in a high quality field where you had to run under 32 minutes to make the top 100 and 92 women ran faster than 40!

And we had a few “pudding-hunters” taking on the horrific Big Dipper sand dune over at Merthyr Mawr in the Annual Pudding Race. First home for us was Ian Southwell 12th in 49:34, followed in by Anthony Bannon 37th in 54:41, 196th Madeleine Attridge 196th in 70:30 and Darren Morgan (returning from injury) 250th in 78:03. Chris Nellins seemed to find himself in the Fun Run Category(!), finishing 31st in 67:58, along with Louise Hunt 49th in 72:38….and late news just in, Louise came 3rd in the Female Vet Category, congratulations!
