26 Jan Weekend Roundup 25-26 January 2020
Last weekend in January = Lliswerry 8 = Club Championship Points!
But first we have some parkrun action to report….
Maybe a few explanations needed to explain some “unexpected” (i.e. slower than ‘normal’) times. Freddie Brown was the 20 minute pacer at Grangemoor, and did a pretty good job of it, finishing in 20:06. Anthony Bannon got his times wrong up in Ruchill, late to start and a run-from-the-back 23:12. Meanwhile down at Wormwood Scrubs Clem and Janice Clement were imprisoned in a world of mud…but got out on parole for a nice photo op…..
Some excellent running closer to home, more specifically Cosmeston Lakes…Andy Pearce nabbed the V50 Age Category record with a sparkling 19:30, whilst John Davies made his parkrun debut with a tremendous 22:07 to take the V65 record…sorry Malcolm!

So on to Sunday….and a rather soggy Lliswerry 8, although the vicious winds of previous years were thankfully slightly muted this morning. Nearly 760 runners toed the line and there was a bumper turn out of Twenty-Seven Blue and Yellow seeking those precious Club Championship points.
At the sharp end there was some great rivalry going on, as Ian Southwell dragged Nathan Christoforato round the course, the latter smashing his course PB by a massive 1:38, which is equivalent to over 12 seconds per mile…superb running by both. Next in for us was the unassuming Kevin Chalke, who is also entering a rich vein of form, with a similar 90 second improvement from last year. Really touching to see Kevin’s response to hearing the news that he was victorious in the V55-59 age Category…”what, me?!” Here he is receiving his just rewards….
Great runs for David Brown and Kit Lambert, then a bit of a P&D bun fight going on behind them, as Simon Williamson discovered the long-lost memory of running a race with legs that didn’t hurt, dragging round a Club pace train consisting of Bethan Apglyn, Chris Herdman and Steven Barker. The Club Chairman was surprised as anyone to pick up 3rd spot in his V60-64 age Category.
Louise Hunt ran a strong solitary race next in, followed in by Chris Nellins who defended his V65-69 title from last year…great running Chris! Lisa Cleary and Simon Grant ran round having a good old chinwag, which resulted in Lisa nabbing 3rd spot in her V55-59 Age Category!
And there solid runs from the rest of the team….Gareth Davies, Peter Trott, Kath Petersen (those track sessions doing the job, Kath!), Dan Rayner, Arabella Calder, Jan Frost (making her Club debut), Margaret Ogden, Steve Goodfellow, Sarah Lees, Debbie Rees (well under 60 minute pace for 10k), Julie Broughton (pacing husband Mark), Emma Healy, Glenn Powell and Andrea Goodfellow.
Full results can be found here

Not surprisingly, a long run in the heat needs a well-thought out rehydration strategy…..but I bet the cakes weren’t as nice as the ones in Newport!
