25 Aug Weekend Roundup 24-25 August 2019

Bit of a scorcher this weekend…30 degrees C, what’s that all about? As the photo above suggests, emergency “fueling” was the name of the game at the Llantwit Major 10k trail race, another race featuring in the P&D Off Road Club Championships.

Some mixed fortunes for our gang. Nathan Chistoforato was running strongly in 2nd place for most of the race, before hitting a bit of a wall in the last km, although he still managed to get across the line in a fine 7th position. Kevin Chalke was an excellent 3rd in the only Masters Category of M45+, where we also had David Brown 5th and 2nd claim member Paul McGilvray 10th. Lisa Cleary continued her return to full fitness with a fine 5th place in W45+.

Full results and team photo below; actually the results are missing a certain Malcolm Bradley who didn’t enter his Team details! Malcolm finished 75th in a time of 53:27, and also picked up a couple of South Wales Regional Champs medals from Club Secretary Louise Hunt….M65 Gold from the Rabbit Run, and M65 Bronze from the Porthcawl 10k road race. Well done Malcolm!

Saturday also had a fair bit of parkrun action. I was marshaling the Car Park Exit at Barry Island and had fun keeping the beach tourists away from the runners! We also had two Tail Walkers from our membership, well done Cathy Pearce at BI and Debbie Williams at Grangemoor.

Sunday dawned with another beautifully warm summer’s day, and another event in our Club Championships. The Butetown Mile (Cardiff) is an unique road race, being a virtually straight mile in the heart of the city and is one of only three places in the world to host a straight mile road race alongside Fifth Avenue, New York and the Champs-Elysees, Paris. We had entrants in the Elite Race (sub seven minutes) and the Fun Race, and they all had a blast.  Top finisher for us in the Elite was Kit Lambert, 31st in 5:55 (race won by James Thie in 4:28). Behind Kit there was a right old ding dong battle going on between Cath Barker, Chris Nellins and Beth Apglyn…they finished in that order 33rd/34th/36th in 6:10/6:11/6:12! This superb image taken by Mike Morgan wonderfully encapsulates the expression “eyeballs out”!

Not far behind this battling trio came Terry McCarthy finishing 38th in 6:23, with Malcolm Bradley 41st in 6:32.

In the Fun Race we had Kate Cheshire 17th (6:53), Lisa Cleary 19th (7:05), Nigel Adams 25th (7:29), Emma Shumack 8:15 and Debbie Rees 39th (8:42).

Cath Barker ran her Elite Mile then cycled back to the start to accompany son David to a very nippy 6:28, 13th overall and 7th Under-12…great running both!

Did you spot Steve Hill and Michelle Hoey in the parkrun results for Cardiff above? This was actually their hors d’oeuvres for a massive weekend of racing, the CPR Challenge (total distance a marathon 42.2km). Three hours later they raced a 10k, followed  by a 4.5k XC race at 4.30pm. On Sunday morning they completed a Half Marathon at 9am, followed by a Mile race at 1.30pm…I just want to lie down thinking about it. Steve finished 38th overall in 4:11:20 with times of 24:51, 53:25, 25:08, 2:20:12 and 7:44. Michelle nearly did a “stealth” to get past him, finishing 40th in 4:14:04, with times of 27:23, 54:19, 2:19:36 and 7:36….great stuff both of you! Full results here.

Finally we had a couple of runners taking part in the Severn Bridge Half Marathon. Paul McGilvray lined up for his 2nd race of the weekend, and finished 129th in 1:40:18…this was actually good enough for 3rd place in the M50 age category, great running Paul. Steven Barker obviously fancied something a bit further than a mile, so abandoned the family for a bit of 13 mile action…he finished 324th in a time of 1:52:43. Full results here.
