Weekend Roundup 20-21 Oct 2018

21 Oct Weekend Roundup 20-21 Oct 2018

Friday saw about 30 of us gathering in the “auspicious and plush” surroundings of Penarth Labour Club…free to hire thankfully, and a cheap bar downstairs. Most people were there to find out whether they needed to get in training for the London Marathon next April, as we were balloting two entries to the race.  You’ll know the results already by looking at the picture at the top of this page (crafted composition courtesy of Lyn Evans).  Steven Barker won the Club entry, Debbie Williams won the Charity entry (for Lymphona Action) and Kit Lambert was pulled out of the hat as the Reserve. Well done you three! Debbie’s success was greeted with the biggest cheer of the night and lots of frenetic texting and Facebooking….the girl herself had been putting in some “warm weather training” in Ibiza, getting her feet into marathon condition…..she was actually flying home as the result was announced and can now commit to some “hard yards” before next April!

The Skittles Competition that followed-on produced some fierce competition and a lot of laughs. There were two schools of technique on display…the finely-tuned accuracy of Debbies Rees and Trish Cottnam, as opposed to the macho muscle power of Jon Ely and James “The Destroyer” Buckingham, who both seemed keen to launch the skittles and ball into the downstairs bar! James’ technique also extended to “taking out” rivals and spectators, an errant bowl landing on Debbie’s foot as she attempted to re-set the skittles; on his next go most of the spectators were diving for cover and hiding under tables as he aimed to take out a single skittle on the left side of the alley…

The last two standing were Debbie and Jon, with the former winning the bountiful kitty, to much applause. There was also an emotional reunion for Simon Williamson and his much-loved (but rather smelly) cap, which he’d mislaid at cross country the previous week; but not before “Cappy” was used to draw the ballot tickets and collect the skittles kitty!

As ever, there was some fine parkrun action on Saturday morning….both running and volunteering.  Malcolm Bradley combined a marshalling role with a bit of cheeky paparazzi snapping at Barry Island….

Ben Butler-Madden finished 3rd in 17:45

Kevin Chalke finished 7th in 20:23 and scored a cracking 76.04% Age Grading

Dave Matthews finished 17th in 21:59

Lisa Cleary proved you can burn the candle at both ends! 35th (3rd female) in 23:37

Beth Apglyn ran with her mate Ally and finished a relaxed 93rd in 28:22

And first-timer Debbie Rees (P&D Skittles Champion) finished 11th in a highly commendable 29:48

Here are the results at Grangemoor…..

16th Chris Herdman 21:35 (3 secs PB), 19th Tom Eales 21:46, 21st Cath Barker (2nd female) 21:56, 24th Terry McCarthy 22:22 (equals PB), 43rd Peter Trott 23:49, 56th James (The Destroyer) Buckingham 24:13, 164th Rachel Eales 34:23, 135th Zoe Barber 34:23.

And further afield….

Southampton: 356th Tim Monckton 25:32

Springburn, Glasgow: 48th Clem Clement 25:19, 101st Janice Clement 31:46. Encouraging to see Clem getting faster each week after his achilles injury problems.

Sunday saw a small group of members (Malcolm Bradley, Nigel Adams, Steve New, Sarah Lees, Anna Helsing and Susannah Kingdon) heading up into the depths of mid Wales for the Ron Skilton Half Marathon trail race

Full results can be found here

Malcolm finished 54th in 2:09:08, taking 2nd place in V60+. Next home was Anna 73rd in 2:21:35. Steve was 112th in 2:40:50, followed in by Sarah 123rd in 2:48:07 and Susannah 126th in 2:49:44. Taking lots of photos and not yet fully-fit, Nigel finished 130th in 2:57:54.

A more in-depth report from Malcolm is hot of the press and can be viewed here

Malcolm also sent me details of another race this weekend.  Michelle Hoey & Steve Hill did the “Black Mountain Trail Race “  – 9 miles – finishing 176th & 178th in 1:45.

And finally some great photos from the Ron Skilton Half….
