18 Jan Weekend Roundup 16-17 Jan 2021

With the whole country locked down again, running events are understandably few and far between. However Welsh Athletics set up Virtual Road Relays in the different regions (South, East & West) just before Christmas, and 22 members of P&D signed up to run a solo 5k effort between 17th December and 17th January 2021. The idea was to run your own time trial and submit Garmin/Strava evidence to the Opentrack platform, with teams comprising of the 4 best times.

Quick off the mark for us was Richard Jackson, who ran a credible 28 minutes  in the M45-50 Category back on 23rd December! Other early starters were Arabella Calder (27:28) and Margaret Ogden (28:22) in W45-50, and eventually they were joined by Sarah Lees who ran a blinder, 25:11 for 3rd fastest, and Kath Petersen 25:49, in 4th place.  This was good enough for these Ladies to win W45-50 by a handsome margin from Ogmore Phoenix….many congratulations to all four of you.

Lisa Cleary is in flying form at the moment, no doubt honed to a high level of fitness trying to run down every street in Barry as part of the City Strides Challenge! She had various attempts at running a 5k, but in the end chose her excellent time of 22:46 achieved on 31st December as part of another virtual challenge, the Nos Galan 5k. This was good enough for fastest time in the SW Relays W55-80 Category, and she was backed up by a resurgent Mandy Barrington (26:57), Debbie Rees (PB 28:16) and Jan Frost (28:42)..they feature above as another Gold-medal winning quartet…congratulations Ladies! We discovered later that their total time of 1:46:41 was the best in their category across the whole of Wales, too…get in!!

Elsewhere we struggled to get 4 runners home, and in some categories the standard was extremely high. I’m slightly biased (!) but the times recorded by the top athletes in M55-80 were at top, national level; however Malcolm Bradley still managed to nab the top spot in M70, 8 seconds ahead of his rival and good mate Ron Morris. There’s no truth in the rumour that Malcolm ten 5ks before Sunday until he finished one he was happy with! Simon Williamson got 2021 off to a solid start with his best 5k performance for some time….

***Late News coming in as write this…..Kaarina Ruta went out on Sunday evening from Sully and ran 20:48 to take the top spot in W35-40! Kaarina is another member who had a few attempts and admitted to me that she could run faster still…but as a runner who concentrates on longer races this was a great solo time trial. Catherine Barker had earlier posted a time of 21:24 (2nd W40), and with Melissa Smith recording 24:20 we were very close to gaining another team win, but unfortunately couldn’t field a 4th scorer.

Steven Barker and Gideon Calder ran 22:53 and 24:39 respectively in M45-50, and last, but very much not least, Kuldeep Singh ran 24:58 in M35-40. Kuldeep is presently based in Delhi and has been slowly coming back from injury…top work mate, supporting the Club from afar!! Full results can be found HERE.
