16 Feb Weekend Roundup 15-16 February 2020

Need to travel across the globe for a bit of Blue and Yellow action this weekend, as there wasn’t much going on here! Clem and Janice Clement were safely ensconced in Wellington, New Zealand, known as the Windy City, but surely not as bad as Dyffryn Gardens, which conspired to make Lisa Cleary come a cropper on her long run (don’t worry, she’s not shrunk inside there!)…..

Many of us were prevaricating big time about going out in “Storm Dennis”, but the miles were done…treadmills (Bethan and Nigel), falling over (Lisa and Nathan), running the hell that is known as “5 mile Lane” (Julie and David), we all got out there and suffered for our art!

Lots of parkrun cancellations, but if you looked hard enough you could get your fix….

And some impressive achievements out there. Freddie Brown getting close to sub-18 at a windswept Grangemoor and nice to see a shot of two P&Ders Chris and Andy running in opposite directions at the same venue…..and Joe Turner taking on the iconic Bushy Park course and coming away with a cracking 21:30.

We also had Lisa Cleary returning to sparkling form at Cardiff with a tremendous 22:40, ahead of the Seville Marathon next weekend…just try and stay upright, girl!😉

The 20/10 San Dom Road Races were cancelled, as the River Taff burst its banks and water took over large swathes of Bute Park. Fortunately, things were looking better for the Wellington Bay Half Marathon; here’s Clem’s report….

“There are not too many half marathons that start at 7:45am but Janice and Clem managed to find one on the far side of the globe when they tackled the Round the Bays Wellington Half Marathon in New Zealand. The race is very aptly named as it hugs the coastline for nearly all the 13.1 miles making it an amazingly scenic route. There were four events taking places; the Half, a 10k, a 6.5k run and a walk.

Being based in Glasgow, the Clements are more used to low single digit temperatures to run in at this time of year, so were glad to open the curtains to an overcast sky that kept the temperatures down. Being next to the coast also meant that the course was subject to the ‘breeze’; as the route wound in and out of several bays, the strength and direction varied quite a bit.

The route was about as flat as you can get, and just above sea level. Again there can’t be too many courses that have signage to “Tsunami safe grounds” on them. The start was right in the heart of the city but finished in a park on the outskirts near the airport, but the organisation was slick in moving bags and transporting runners back to centre on a fleet of shuttle buses.

By the time we had finished the sun was starting to break through creating a warmth for sitting about and chatting to fellow runners in the park. One of the clubs in the city is Wellington Scottish and we discovered that until recently they actually only had one Scot, but somehow we managed to find someone who had family in Penarth and whose auntie was from Barry! Clem ran 1:37:40 while Janice did 2:01:37″.
