15 Mar Weekend Roundup 14-15 March 2020

As we move into “batten down the hatches” territory, with the COVID-19 virus dominating the news across the globe, your P&D Roundup Editor wonders whether he will have anything to write about in the next few weeks (months?), as UK running events begin to fall like skittles. Thankfully a few of us have been out and about this weekend, and so there are recent stories to be shared (for now…)

Let’s start with some parkrun news. Cosmeston Lakes was all systems go, with Run Director Lyn Evan’s “emergency bucket from the garage” pressed in to service at the last minute as a finish token receptacle…hopefully Lyn found a suitable supply of disinfectant to finish off the job. Some great volunteer effort from Club members, we think pink really suits you, Nigel Adams and Jan Frost….

John Davies is our cover boy this week, taking on some young whipper snappers, most of whom he dispatched before finishing 15th. Club Chairman Simon Williamson tried his level-best to hang on to JD, finishing 20th in his Cosmeston debut….apparently he enjoyed running directly through the puddles as the young whipper snappers tip-toed round the edges!

First home for us was Ian Southwell, 2nd finisher in 17:50, only two seconds shy of his course PB, and this being Ian combining parkrun with lots of extra training miles either side! Photos courtesy of Abyd Aziz Quinn and Malcolm Bradley.

Meanwhile over at Barry Island we were having success and landmark appearances. Nathan Christoforato was 1st finisher in 18:48, and new member Meurig Chapple celebrated his 100th parkrun appearance…well done both!

Just for a change, Clem and Janice Clement weren’t the only P&Ders running up in Bonnie Scotland. Laurie Smith and Katie Clark were in Edinburgh, with Laurie recording a zippy PB of 22:49, which I reckon is something around 30 seconds faster than previously, so earns him a place in Chairman’s #20in20 Club….congratulations Laurie!

Perhaps one of the most gratifying runs of the weekend was happening back down here, at Grangemoor parkrun. Debbie Warburton has had a truly horrible few months recovering from a foot operation last year, so it was lovely seeing her complete the course with husband Warbie yesterday. Small steps, Deb, but you should be very proud of yourself, crossing the line 48th in a time of 25:18…awesome.

Sunday saw the staging of the San Dom 10 and 20 mile road races, which many local runners had scheduled as prep for April’s London Marathon….which has now become October’s London Marathon.

“Queen of Pace Judgement” Bethan Apglyn was working her metronomic magic with a beautifully-timed, measured performance. Beth finished in a cracking time of 2:37:02, which my maths suggests would have had her “well under” 3:30 for the full Marathon distance, with superb negative splits for 10 miles; 79:40 followed by 77:22. 48th overall, 6th Overall Lady and 2nd Senior Lady…fantastic running.

She was followed in by Malcolm Bradley (99th/2nd MM65/2:59:28), Mark Taylor (114th/3:08:31) and Darren Morgan (129th/3:31:59)…great running, guys.

Hopefully the next few weeks will not be bereft of news from Penarth and Dinas Runners…and let’s hope all our friends and family keep well.
