15 Dec Weekend Roundup 14-15 December 2019

Ian Southwell gets our “top billing” this weekend, with two back-to-back scorching performances…full story below.

But firstly we had a wonderful P & D Christmas Party on Friday evening, our hosts yet again Andrea and Steve Goodfellow, owners of the Marconi Inn. We are truly grateful to them for their hospitality and welcoming venue, a lovely touch being the welcome glass of bubbly. Thanks also to Mandy Barrington for organising logistics and Debbie Rees for booking our DJ for the night, Louis. Debbie is also available as Mrs Claus for children’s parties…..

This being a runners’ Christmas party, the dance floor action was pretty frenetic, although judging by our efforts with The Pogues Xmas song, some of us might have peaked a little early…need to get a proper training programme in place for next year!

Of course, Friday night runs into Saturday morning and that can only mean one thing…parkrun. As I approached the Cosmeston Lakes car park I spotted Lyn Evans and assistant James seeking shelter from the elements under a rather sparse-looking tree; fortunately there was a blue sky just around the corner, but it was still flipping cold. Cosmeston celebrated it’s 2nd event with around 100 runners, most of whom seemed to be Cornelly Striders, and one of our own was first past the post, Ian Southwell striding home in a rather symmetric 18:18

Up in the home of golf, the Clements were feeling a bit rough but needed a slice of parkrun action…..here’s Clem’s report.

Janice and Clem decided to go to Troon for parkrun this weekend, despite feeling below par and a little green behind the gills. There was a weather window as far as the rain was concerned, but 26mph made staying on course a little tricky. The course was out to a point about 750 metres and back before heading off on a longer loop. The run teed off on the promenade and ran with the wind for the slice, but then there was the turn back directly into it. Clem chipped in with a bit of protection for Janice. Turning back into the wind made it seem a fairway longer, but having had the advantage for a while ironed it all out. They were with their ‘It’s All About Breakfast’ group and after it was off to the 19th hole for tea fresh from the caddie. Janice ran 28:38 and Clem 28:40″.

The weather didn’t get any better on Sunday, as a few hardy individuals gathered for the annual Christmas Cracker 10k Trail Race in the Cottrell Park Golf Resort, organised by our good friends at Sportzmad.

Another great opportunity to get out the Christmas-themed outfits. Chris Nellins opted to amalgamate his rather ‘controversial’ United Kingdom John Bull outfit with some festive baubles. He had to fend off the usual political comments on the start line and then suffered a ‘bauble-mishap’ after half a mile, necessitating a lengthy pit stop and very little sympathy from his fellow P&D Senior Citizens…who were busy engaging in a Battle Royale. Brian Law skipped away up the muddy paths, never to be seen again, but Malcolm Bradley and Frank Atherton started a ding dong battle, which played right into the hands of the Chairman (complete with Santa hat) Simon Williamson. Little did he know, Terry McCarthy was hunting him down…so the last mile had the unlikely spectacle of four P&D Veterans battling for the line in a dangerous game of old boys poker; who would crack first? The results are below! (missing from these was Ruth Cann…73rd overall in 57:13, 4th MW35)

Away from all this drama, Ian Southwell secured his second win of the weekend, taking the MM35 crown and 5th overall. Cath Barker matched him in MW35, with a great win and should have also won a prize for some great Santa shorts! That man Brian (pictured below, pic courtesy of Malcolm) asserted his dominance in the MM55-64 Category, and the Senior Men’s Team of Ian, Jon Ely and David Brown stormed to victory as First Team Overall. A fantastic morning’s work for the Club, and well done to everyone who battled the elements and completed the course.

Of course whilst we were all freezing our bits off in the wilds of the Vale, there had to be a member enjoying cocktails in the balmy sunshine, next to an idyllic Mediterranean beach. This week it was the turn of Lisa Cleary…but first she had the ‘small matter’ of running a marathon (Malaga), and she glided round in a super solid 4:10. Enjoy the cocktails Lis, richly-deserved….
