Tintern Trot is an off road trail race through the lovely countryside and woodland above Tintern in the Wye Valley. The course is six miles long with a thousand feet of elevation in the first 3.5 miles. It covers narrow muddy paths, forestry roads, difficult technical ridges with loads of tree roots and stone slopes. The final descent into Tintern is steep taking in forest slopes, open fields and country back roads. There is a really wicked hill 3 miles in which is about 45 Degrees and approx 500 metres long. 289 runners took part from a variety of clubs and there were 11 runners from Penarth and Dinas. Richard Jackson-Hookins came in 7th place, top 10 finish in a great time of 41:03, given the terrain it was superb piece of running and to be fair, I don’t even think he was trying that hard.

Andy Jones came in next (25th) 44:44, Marc Durkin (69th)  49:36 and Cath Tailby the first Penarth and Dinas lady came home (98th) 51:45 and was the 13th lady overall, brilliant running Cath also 5th in age group. Malcolm Bradley yet again smashed it (125th) 53:28 and 3rd in his age group. Ruth Cann hit a great (146th) 56:20. Ruth was closely followed by Matthew Robertson (176th) 58:42. Helen Phillips completed the course (203rd) 1:01:54, Anna Helsing (217th) 1:03:39, Tania Miranda (218th) 1:03:42 and myself Nigel Adams (219th) 1:03:54. The final placed 289th runner came in at 1:23:15 so performance across the board was very creditable.

I just won’t go off quite so quick next year, the hill at three miles was a shock, but I think we are all capable of sub 1 hour.

Happy running Penarth and Dinas.
