01 Mar St David’s Day Weekend Roundup

So whilst our daffodils were being blown all the way to Pembrokeshire, Clem and Janice Clement were cooling down with complimentary iced lollies on finishing the aptly-named Golden Beach parkrun just outside Brisbane. I’m sure Club Members will be pleased to know that our well-traveled couple are on their way home to Glasgow as I write this, where the weather conditions might, just possibly, be a little different…..

And this weekend they were joined by three other parkrun tourists in far-flung locations. Steve Hill and Michelle Hoey took on the delights of Futakotamagawa parkrun (try saying that after a few sakis!), presumably out in Japan for the Tokyo Marathon, which was unfortunately cancelled for public entries (the Elite Race did take place, with 28 runners inside 2:10!) Social member Jeanette Ward is out in Australia at the moment, and found some parkrun action at Quinns Rocks…love the names they come up with in Oz.

Closer to home, Storm Jorge was doing his level best to mess with events, causing the cancellation of Sunday’s Gwent League XC fixture in Swansea, and quite a few parkruns…the Cardiff Blackweir course was under water, which bolstered the Grangemoor numbers…3rd record turnout in as many weeks. Strong running here by Chris Seal (21:27) and Rachel Eales (21:52), these two dragging Chairman Simon Williamson (22:18) to first finish position in the 60-64 Age Category.

Cosmeston Lakes proved quite difficult to get to, with flooded roads in the area, and thus a small field of only 67…but lots of P&D representation both running and volunteering. Ian Southwell and Catherine Barker did the double as first male and female finishers, and nice to see Abyd Quinn Aziz getting fitter with every passing week with a fine 2nd spot in the 60-64 A.C.

This weekend also saw some of our marathon runners testing their form out at the Admiral City of Newport Half Marathon. Most of the feedback coming back from Strava suggests the course was “twisty, lumpy and breezy”! Everyone ran a PB, so let’s give them a big 👏👏

First home for us was Nathan Christoforato, finishing 42nd in a time of 1:21:18, knocking nearly 3 minutes off his PB from Cardiff in 2018. Hanging on to him like a limpet in the final three miles was Paul Morton, 43rd in 1:21:19, also a PB, besting his time from Cardiff last year by 72 seconds. Both these lads were after sub-80 and were slightly disappointed…but trust me, the quality miles they are putting in will deliver the results they’re after in the near future.

Next were training partners Joe Turner and Bethan Apglyn. Joe had a fantastic run, which really backed up his recent form over 5k….he finished 207th in a time 1:34:27, knocking a massive 9 minutes and 42 seconds off his PB from Llanelli last February. Beth was 268th (13th Senior Woman) in a time of 1:37:13, which was exactly 5 minutes faster than the time she recorded at Swansea last year. Her pace judgement was absolutely phenomenal…every kilometre run in the range 4:29 to 4:45, with five of them on the nail of 4:30. Exactly what you need to run a strong marathon, and I’m guessing we are all excited to see what Beth can do in London at the end of April.

Closing in for us in 1315th was Darren Morgan, making his debut in a road Half Marathon (according to Power of 10!) and completing the course in 2:10:20. Darren has made huge progress since joining the club last year, and is one of our most diligent members when it comes to turning out on Monday and Wednesday group sessions. He’s also running the London Marathon in support of the Anthony Nolan Trust and you can sponsor him at this link
