19 Jul Ponty Loop – Race Report and club championship table
By Richard Jackson-Hookins
Sunday the 17th of July was the day Runners from Penarth And Dinas took on the off-road mountain race ‘The Ponty Loop’. P&D was well represented and with the race being on the club’s current main club championship fixture list there was plenty to play for between club mates.
The race was a gruelling 6 miles in total. 3 miles constant climbing and 3 miles dropping back down to the start/finish line. Its regarded as one of the hardest climbs of the season. The route is run on a mix of forrest road and trails. The monster climb later becomes the rapid decent as you run the same route after doing a loop of the top mountain. 1st to finish from club and securing a podium position in 3rd place overall in a time of 39.34 was Richard Jackson-Hookins. Ben Butler-Madden was the next P&D runner to complete the route, he finished 4th overall in a time of 39.56. Next up with a strong run was Dave Matthews in 48.35 followed closely by Ian Warburton in 48.46. Debbie Evans was 1st P&D lady home in 51.40 and was placed 32nd finisher overall, a great effort considering she suffered a recent ankle injury. Unfortunately the ankle looked a little sore after the race. Next to finish from club was Glenn Powell in 53.07 followed by Malcolm Bradley in 54.34. Bev Warburton completed the course in 58.23, Jo Hanks sneaked under the 1hr in 59.28, next up was Lindsey Hunt just missing the sub 1hr but still a strong run in 1.00.14. Next up was Sarah Lees in 1.01.33. Bringing the troops home was Yvonne Williams in a time of 1.04.39.
After the race several P&D runners attended the price ceremony. Richard received a bottle of wine for his 3rd place podium finish. Due to the top runners already winning prizes the race’s prize fund was then distributed down to the next fastest finishers which saw Ben also called up to receive a well deserved bottle of wine! A slightly surprised Ben was mid-bite through his post race snack of a double cheese burger and chips when his name was called! And also collecting a prize for being fastest runner in her age category was Yvonne. The P&D men’s team which was Rich, Ben and Dave finished in 2nd overall. A great result but unfortunately just missing out on a prize this time as there was only a prize for top spot. A big well done to all the runners that competed. The next championship race is Wednesday 20th July with the fast and flat 5k SSAFA race. A welcome return to the road after the heights of the mighty Loop!
