06 May Gwent League End of Season Report
Gwent League Season 2016/2017
The beautiful surrounds of Pembrey Park was the new venue for the fifth and final fixture of the Gwent League for 2016/17 season. A good P&D turnout, with great runs by everyone, all gaining valuable points for the team.
As in previous 4 events, Cath Tailby led the ladies home in 57th place, overall she finished 5th in the strong LV45 category. Andrea Hurman was next in 70th. Cath and Andrea were the ladies ‘full setters’ of the season. Yvonne Williams had a great run to finish in 117th, she was 5th overall in her age category despite only running 4 events. Anna Helsing wasn’t far behind in 122nd place. Shirley Howman was next in 134th place with Judy Maragna, with her usual strong sprint for the line was 156th. The ladies Team finished 10th on the day but 12th overall and will be demoted to Division 2. The ladies team have done well to say in Division 1 for many years but the standards have increased incredibly recently.
Ben Butler-Madden led the Men’s team home in an amazing 11th position out of 214 finishers, beating quite a few if his other team rivals. Not far behind was Richard Jackson-Hookins, back from injury, earning valuable points for the team. A strong run from Andy Jones finishing in a very creditable 80th was next, Andy missed out on a ‘full setter’ this season due to illness in December. After his debut Cross Country at the Welsh Championships (it only cost £4 so I thought I’d enter!!!) Mike Morgan had a good run to finish next in 156th. Malcolm Bradley was 197th place, not long after finishing well up the field in the ladies race, where his age-category are permitted to run the shorter distance. Peter Trott showed a big improvement from his last cross country to finish in 201st. Stephen Farmer 211th and Peter Balmont 213rd did well to finish in a very strong Men’s race, gaining valuable points for the team. Peter was the only ‘full setter’ for the Men this season. The Men’s team did very well to finish 7th in Division 2.
Well done to everyone who ran or supported this year ……. bring on October when it all starts again!!!
