30 Dec Christmas News and Review of the Year

This week we have all the best bits from the Xmas parkruns and a whistle stop tour of a Blue & Yellow 2019!

Top Santa Award has to go to Clem Clement, our Cover Boy this week…big kudos, managed to run 28 minutes at Bolton dressed like that!

Mind you, he wasn’t alone in dressing up at Bolton…..

However Speediest Christmas-Themed Run must go to Dave Mathews, who (very appropriately!) appeared as “Turkey Head” at Barry Island and gobbled his way round to 7th place and a time of 20:17….running away from the oven, maybe? Striding out the opposite way was a rather fetching Santarette, Bev Warburton.

There were some cracking PBs sprinkled about the place on Christmas Day, too. Cath Barker started the Chairman’s Challenge #20in20 a few days early, with a speedy  20:41 course PB at Cardiff Blackweir, and Debbie Rees got in the act at Barry Island, out-sprinting the Chairman to beat her previous PB by exactly 20 seconds!

Further results from CardiffSteven Barker 20:58, Ruth Cann 22:35 and Mark Taylor 24:35. At Barry Island, following in from Turkey Dave we had Andy Pearce 20:29, David Brown 20:47, Paul McGilvray 21:12 (course PB), Bethan Apglyn 23:07, Lisa Cleary 24:12, Bev Warburton 28:31, Simon Williamson 29:06, Cam Large 29:18, Kate Cheshire 32:52.

At Bolton, we had Clem Clement on 28:12 and Janice Clement on 29:25….a congested start and a big field meant a very slow ‘off’ for both of them.

Here are the parkrun results from Saturday…..more strong running from P&D squad at Cosmeston, and a report from Clem and Janice up in Heaton…

“Having done mass parkruns at Bushy and Newcastle in the spring this was a chance to try the north-west’s ‘mega’ parkrun. Event 485 having started in June 2009 it is also steeped in history. Talking of steep there was a testing rise that Barbara (the First Time Briefer wearing her 500 t-shirt) affectionately called Angina Hill between 2 & 3k but as she said, what goes up, must go down, and so proved as k4 had a lovely down slope that was very runnable and the climb had not been as bad as was feared. The course was similar to the layout style of parkrun Cosmeston Lakes; a short lap to start and then a much longer one. There were 722 finishers making for a great turn out. Janice did 27:18 and Clem 24:25.”

Meanwhile, over in Northern Ireland Anthony Bannon was ‘home’ and taking on the Christmas Cracker Trail Race, which as far as I can tell is a Pairs Race held over 8.5 miles at Castlewellan Forest Park. Anthony and his partner Michael Sinton finished 30th in 66:35, and it was fist pumps all round (photo courtesy of Paul Fegan).

Sunday had a run closer to home, the Old Father Time 5 mile Road Race, organised by Les Croupiers. Some cracking runs and photos from the day (thank you again, Paul Stillman!). Gary Brown motored home in 8th place (27:43) a PB by 6 seconds, followed in by Nathan Christoforato with a massive PB of 68 seconds (29:09/18th).

Cath Barker continued with her rich vein of form to run 33:27, which was good enough for 2nd in VW40-44, and John Davies took his brilliant cross country form onto the road for 2nd in the highly competitive VM65-69 category (34:18/75th)…earning a bottle of festive wine! Cath also crashed her way into the Club Records page, with the 2nd fastest time ever by a P&D Lady.

Closing in for us were Steven Barker (34:29/80th) and Cath Tailby (36:51/108th)….full results can be found here.

Okay, that’s all the recent news, but 2019 has been an amazing year for Penarth and Dinas Runners, summed up by our Video Photo Album for the Year. Here are some of the highlights….

JANUARY…..we organised our 2nd CF64 Winter Race, and the weather gods gave us a better day than the previous year! Great turnout, and lots of plaudits from the runners praising the organisation and the marshaling. And we had a bumper turnout of members at the Lliswerry 8, helped by the fact that it was a Club Championships event.

FEBRUARY…..It was time for the Annual Awards Night, with Quiz Master Extraordinaire Mandy Barrington providing the entertainment…now who was John Thaw married to, Sheila?!? Meanwhile on the roads Ben Butler-Madden was mixing it with the elite, finishing 3rd in the Llanelli Half Marathon.

MARCH…..Time for a bit of globe trotting, with Ben, Bethan Apglyn, Lisa Cleary and Andrea Hurman taking on another of the Major Marathons, this time in Tokyo. A Sixth Major for the latter two, with Ben and Beth both running PBs.

APRIL…..Quite a few of us took on the Vale of Glamorgan Ultra, legging it from either Penarth or Porthkerry to Ogmore. And we had loads of road race success…another PB and Club Record for Ben in the London Marathon (2:32:23), Ruth Cann winning MW35 Category at the Ponty Reverse 10, and Beth taking on another foreign marathon, this time in North Korea!

MAY…..Another busy month. We organised the very popular P5MT Race in Porthkerry Country Park and took on various fast and furious 5k road races in Cardiff….oh and did a Club Takeover at Grangemoor parkrun, which also coincided with Lyn Evans‘ 200th parkrun volunteering stint…wow!

JUNE…..if you thought May was busy, June was pretty mental too. Pride of place must go to our best-ever performance in the Welsh Castles Relay, where we finished a brilliant 26th overall and 22nd in the Open Category. You can relive a monster weekend by watching the WCR Video again!. And lots of kudos to Nigel Adams, who took on the 69 mile Hadrian’s Wall Ultra, and beat it.

JULY…..a month indelibly attached to our Cosmeston Lakes Relays Event, which will celebrate it’s 30th Anniversary in 2020. As ever we had a great turnout of around 200 teams, loads of volunteer marshals and brilliant organisation (yet again) by Lyn Evans and Debbie Williams.

AUGUST…..lots of members took part in the 2nd staging of the Barry 10k Road Race, and we had a rather dark BBQ and Marathon Miles event at the end of the month; it was rearranged due to bad weather in July!

SEPTEMBER…..Great turnout of 5 teams at the Rose Inn Relays, a select squad of ‘Wombles’ took on a litter pick at Sully Beach, and lots of us raced the Cardiff Met 10k.

OCTOBER…..two popular events this month, the Cardiff Half Marathon and the Snowdonia Marathon…lots of photo opportunities!

NOVEMBER……the cross country season was getting full up to speed at Pembrey Country Park, which was the also the venue the following week for the ever-popular SOSPAN 10 MT Race. We also had Representative honours at both the Welsh Inter Regional Champs at Brecon and the Masters Home International at Aintree.

DECEMBER…..this is the month P&Ders grin and bear it with mud and cross country, or head to Bristol Airport en route to Lanzarote! Also time for the Annual Christmas Party

It’s been a great year with lots of tremendous memories and success for Penarth and Dinas Runners…here’s to more of the same in 2020!
