19 Jan CF64 Winter Race Report & Weekend Roundup 18-19 Jan 2020
This weekend saw the first of our three annual races, the CF64 Winter Race, so named because of its postcode and distance in miles…but such is the nature of the course, the time to get round it isn’t that relevant to most of the competitors. It’s more about enjoying some serious puddle action!
Having said that we must congratulate our Men’s and Women’s winners, John Morris (Les Croupiers) & Tammy Nurse who skated around in 38:43 & 45:56 respectively.
Full results can be found here.
The event was created and delivered by a large group of people, wonderfully choreographed by our extremely talented Race Director Lyn Evans. Lyn has taken event organisation to a new level for races in Cosmeston Lakes Country Park…he was the mastermind behind the recently launched parkrun at the same venue, which means he can now schedule his pre-race recce to mesh seamlessly with a Saturday morning check! To be honest, we were a bit nervous at that stage, as the tarmac sections of One Mile Lane were quite treacherous with black ice, and we had to divert parkrunners on to the grass verge at various points. Fortunately, whilst it was very cold overnight, the tarmac had a light dusting that was no problem to run on by race start on Sunday.
Some people who need our thanks are Debbie Williams (Volunteer Coordinator) and the 60-odd marshals and volunteers from P&D, SMR and White Rock who stood out in the cold and cheered you on. They rightly received some fantastic feedback on our Facebook page, many thanks to all of the runners who took the time to comment. And a big thank you to our resident ‘snapper’ Abyd Quinn Aziz…you can see his full gallery on the Facebook page (link above).
We would also like to thank Race Referee Ian McDonald, the team from St John Ambulance and the Park Rangers at Cosmeston Lakes. We were also grateful to the Ladies from Women Running Penarth, who provided the cakes raising funds for their charity, Maggie’s Cancer Care, which you can make further donations to via this link.
Hope to see all the runners back for another bit of winter sun in 2021!
In amongst all this organisational effort, we had P&D runners getting out there and racing on both weekend days.
Some sparkling parkrun performances in there…great running by Kevin Chalke at Cosmeston Lakes (avoiding the black ice!) scorching to a course PB and reclaiming the V55+ Age Record with a fine 19:46. He wasn’t however the first of us to finish there…Freddie Brown had a corker, finishing 3rd in 18:28, and hopefully beginning to see the benefits of Wednesday Club track sessions. Meanwhile over on Barry Island, Debbie Rees bagged another course PB, this time dipping under 29 minutes with 28:40, whilst up in the Midlands (Walsall), Cath Barker claimed 2nd Women’s finisher with a solid 21:23.

Another P&D athlete who’s been working extremely hard over the winter is Nathan Christoforato, putting in lots of metronomic track sessions down at Jenner Park and solid long runs on the road, often very early in the morning before work. Well Nathan reaped the rewards today, with a tremendous new PB at the Speedway 10k near Chepstow. A quality field had been assembled, and this dragged Nathan round at sub-six minute mile pace for the awesome time of 36:13. Top work, fella! (Congratulations also to two ex-members who produced massive PBs at the same race, Ben Butler-Madden just outside 32 minutes and Paul Morton close on the heels of Nathan!)
Finally, we have our first Marathoner of the year! Paul McGilvray took on the Gloucester Marathon and finished in the sterling time of 3:32:13, which was good enough for 78th overall and 11th in the MM50 Age Category…well done, Paul!
