30 Jun Weekend Roundup 29-30 June 2019

A fairly quiet weekend, with a few Club members taking on different challenges; but as ever there was parkrun, and a chance for me to choose my three favourite “parkrun Heroes”.

Top of the pile, and by a country mile in my opinion, was lovely Mandy Barrington.  The military precision with which she organised herself to get to the start line of the East Coast parkrun in Singapore was remarkable and a joy to behold! Her words (on her Strava feed)….“straight off the plane after 13 hour flight (05.30), changed in the ladies, grabbed a cab and easily made it for the 07.30 start, whoop! 💪🏻”  The choice of tee shirt was much admired by your friends back home. Well done Mandy, now relax and enjoy the rest of your holiday!

My second parkrun hero is Lisa Cleary. Lisa’s had a tough few months away from running, so it’s brilliant to see her gradually picking up speed again, running close to 25 minutes at Blackweir… we all wish her continuing good health and progress in getting back to her best form by the time the cross country season kicks off.

And as I can’t pick an outright person for the third spot, I’m going to choose two; Nathan Christoforato and Ian Southwell, a second apart on 17:58/17:59 at two separate venues. Need to get your act together, boys….I’m sure if you’d raced each other at the same place you could have knocked another 30 seconds off! 😂😂

Meanwhile, over in Barry Island, the temperature was sizzling, the winds were up and the course was the 3-lap variant. Some nice photos courtesy of Malcolm Bradley (Richard Jackson flying the Blue and Yellow above and Ian Warburton & Glenn Powell below)

Meanwhile on Sunday, several Club members took part in a cycling sportive organised by local club Wenvoe Wheelers. Malcolm Bradley scorched his way ahead around 40 miles of country lanes north of Cowbridge in the mightily impressive time of 2:52, finishing 2nd overall and all the while insisting “it’s not a race”!

Nice wheels Malcolm, but think you need to rock the lycra-look a bit more, like this man Simon ‘Cyrill’ Grant…not sure if there was a “tiger in his tank”, but he covered 80 miles in a nippy 6:12, and had enough energy for a couple of cheeky pints on the way home…..

Also taking part was recent new recruit Graham Roddis, who went round the course slightly faster than Simon, completing it in 5:55. Well done the three of you!

Dave Mathews had a fine run in the Thame 10k Road Race, finishing 59th in 40:59. Full results here.

Apologies if any other performances have slipped under my radar…please get in touch to enable me to put this right.
