26 May Weekly Roundup 26 May 2019

The ever-popular SSAFA 5k Road Race Series kicked off on Wednesday 22nd May, and we had a whopper entry of Blue and Yellow, with full support crew….I’ve calculated that there were 33 P&D members there either racing or supporting, which isn’t far off how many turned up last year for the 30th Anniversary celebration! Great to see lots of you staying on for a drink afterwards, and our prize-winner Ben Butler-Madden surely got the loudest cheer of the evening. Here’s Ben receiving his booty, which no doubt assisted in celebrating his birthday the following day!

There were some great results and performances behind Ben, too…Ian Southwell and Nathan Christoforato had a ding dong battle all the way to the line and both nabbed PBs, with Nathan actually predicting his exact time in the car on the way there! Dave Mathews had a really good run, and seems to be getting faster and faster with each week, and he was closely followed in by Kevin Chalke (2nd MM55) and Colin Caesar (new PB). Also 2nd in her Age Category (MW40) it was lovely to see Cath Barker back at the sharp end after her cycling accident earlier in the year. Like Dave, Terry McCarthy is a week-on-week improver, finishing 6th in MM60, and putting the frighteners up the old guard of Nellins, Bradley and of course Williamson! Beth Apglyn ran a very self-assured and superbly-paced 21:42 for yet another PB, and there were “season’s bests” for James Buckingham and Stephen Farmer. Bev Warburton ran her usual smooth race to finish 4th in her age category (MW55).

It was really good to see some of our new members racing a 5k for the first time, and comparing it to their experiences at parkrun (yes I know it’s not a race!) Well done Matt Webley, Darren Morgan and Jake Bourne…I’m sure there’s lots more to come off your times in future races.

Full results can be found here, and a great selection of photos in Paul Stilman’s tremendous Flickr account.

Saturday 25th May saw the Club do a “takeover” at Grangemoor parkrun, where we regularly have about 10-15 participants. Thank you Louise Hunt for organising and liaising with the Grangemoor team, and Stephen Farmer for suggesting the idea in the first place. It was also an opportunity to eat cake and congratulate Lyn Evans on his 200th parkrun Volunteer stint…wow, that is some record, yet Lyn confided to me that he’s keen to up his actual run record, which like mine sits at a measly 15 or so!

Here are the parkrun results from the weekend…..my three parkrun Heroes this are Lyn Evans (of course!), Paul Morton (47 secs PB at Cardiff) and Lisa Cleary (for being Lisa and getting out there again).

Sunday saw a lot of diverse P & D action all over the place! Julie Broughton and Judy Maragna took on the challenge of the Barry Island Sprint Triathlon, Julie competing for a 2nd time and Judy a debutante. Both of them did incredibly well in quite difficult conditions…choppy water in Whitmore Bay and a blustery wind on the cycle ride through town. Julie smashed her target time by over 10 minutes and finished 2nd in her Age Category, with Judy 1st in her category…brilliant going, ladies! Here’s Julie showing her delight as she crosses the line….

Meanwhile across the channel in France, Andy Pearce was taking on the Mont St Michel Marathon. A really solid performance saw Andy finish in 3:06:46, which was good enough for 7th in his Age Category (V2H?) and 84th overall. Here’s Andy with the obligatory “money shot” (and that looks suspiciously like a P&D vest under the finisher tee shirt, top work!)

Closer to home, we had a few members up the road competing in the Treforest 10k Road Race. Great running by Ruth Cann, picking up the Age Category wine (again!), caught on camera by Malcolm….

Full results link not working at the moment, but also great Age Category runs by Malcolm (4th MM60), Bev (3rd MW55) and Yvonne (2nd MW65)

60th Ruth Cann 46:19, 84th Malcolm Bradley 48:20, 124th Bev Warburton 52:42, 151st Yvonne Williams 55:04, 155th Steve New 55:31, 170th Mandy Barrington 57:33, 189th Darren Morgan 59:41
