24 Mar Weekly Roundup 24 March 2019

Monday saw another running of our Handicap 5 miler, based around the Club training session out of Cogan Leisure Centre…thanks as ever to Lyn Evans for organising this, our plans nearly scuppered by a traffic accident in Dinas Powys. Full results below, but congratulations to Ian Southwell and Louise Hunt scorching round in the fastest Boy/Girl times, and that crafty old dog Chris Nellins predicting his time to within a second. Well done to everyone who took part, and Lyn’s helpers Mandy, Kit, Josh, Simon and Warbie for timing/marshalling.

And so to the weekend, and great mild spring weather to encourage us all to get out there and run or race.

As usual we’ll start with the parkrun results….

Barry Island: 1st Ben Butler-Madden 17:27, 23rd Steven Barker 23:02, 27th (3rd Woman) Beth Apglyn 23:20 (course PB by 14 secs), 51st Ian Warburton 26:07, 64th Sarah Lees 26:54, 72nd Glenn Powell 27:33, 86th Kate Cheshire 29:02, 157th Cath Barker 38:22

My hero from Barry Island has to be Cath Barker…this was her first real run since coming a cropper in a bike accident a few weeks back, and having to endure a long, painful rehabilitation programme. We all send our love and best wishes to you Cath, and hope your recovery is reasonably straightforward from now on.

Grangemoor: 21st Chris Herdman 21:31, 38th Mark Taylor 23:14, 48th Peter Trott 23:46, 55th Gareth Davies 24:12, 59th James Buckingham 24:22, 79th Kath Petersen 25:35 (PB by 10 secs), 108th Arabella Calder 27:18

Newcastle: 80th Clem Clement 21:22, 371st Janice Clement 27:38.

Penallta: 26th (3rd Woman) Louise Hunt 22:45, 52nd Lindsey Hunt 25:11

Haverfordwest: 1st Ian Southwell 19:13

Also on Saturday Frank Atherton was taking on the Mumbles Duathlon down in Swansea…two 5K runs sandwiching a 20 mile (32km) bike ride. Frank finished 184th overall and 20th in the “Vintage Veteran” category, but my favourite stat was him being 8th fastest in his category on the 2nd run…class, mate! Full results here.

There was a choice of four Half Marathons on Sunday….the Club Championship-designated race on the Taff Trail, a trail run in the Forest of Dean, the Weston Super Half and if you were lucky enough to be on holiday in Cyprus (Bev Warburton!) the Limassol Half Marathon. Despite being in full holiday-mode, Bev ran remarkably consistent splits to record a fine 1:57:07 in the Cypriot heat.

Whilst Bev was catching some rays in Cyprus, her bestie Mandy Barrington was topping up the tan in Weston-Super-Mare! Great running Mandy, 2:05:32 for 817th.

Super running also by new recruit David Brown down in the Forest, full results here.

Forest of Dean Half Marathon: 113th David Brown 1:32:32, 591st Helen Griffiths 1:50:37, 1182nd Julie Broughton 2:06:38, 1406th Tania Miranda 2:14:53, 1485th Sarah Lees 2:18:25, 1486th Nigel Adams 2:18:25, 1504th Martin Clarkson 2:18:52

Closer to home, I took the opportunity to lurk in the Taff Trail bushes near Tongwynlais, clicking some snaps and shouting useful advice (“keep moving through!”) to anyone wearing Blue and Yellow. Steve Goodfellow almost flicked his cap around to forward-facing mode to avoid censure from the “Cap Police”, but then decided to showboat shamelessly to the camera!

Meanwhile that fellow Nellins was grabbing a podium spot in the VM60+ category and literally making hay whilst the sun shone, in the absence of arch-rival Malcolm Bradley….looking like a good tussle for the “Super-Vet ” Championship title this year. Full results here.

Taff Trail Half Marathon: 36th Colin Caesar 1:36:00, 38th Kit Lambert 1:36:58, 53rd (2nd VM60+) Chris Nellins 1:40:06, 83rd Steven Barker 1:50:30, 92nd Kate Cheshire 1:53:59, 108th Steve Goodfellow 1:59:28, 123rd Steve New 2:07:34, 124th Stephen Farmer 2:08:20, 127th Andrea Goodfellow 2:08:44

Finally a bit of overseas news, passed on to me by Lyn Evans……

“This photo was just sent to me by former P&D member Dave Ott – still proudly wearing his P&D t-shirt (and vest on warmer days) back home in Louisville, Kentucky. His son Andrew used to run with us too when Dave was over here on assignment, as Manager of the Dow Corning facility in Barry. That was about 8 years ago now. Dave clocked 1:28 and Andrew 1:25″
