09 Dec Weekend Roundup 8 – 9 Dec 2018
What a difference a week makes! One minute we’re shuffling through glutinous mud on a windy Welsh hillside, and in the next moment it’s all Spanish sunshine and who’s getting the sangria in? Well for some of us…I was standing out in horizontal rain and hurricane winds marshalling at Barry Island parkrun, but it’s all right, I’m not jealous at all! 😂 😂
In what has become something of a P & D annual pilgrimage, it was “Lanzarote Weekend”, with a choice of 10 km, Half Marathon or Full Marathon on the menu, along with copious amounts of food, drink and revelry. The fun started on Friday morning, with a specially-scheduled coach taking our noisy bunch to Bristol Airport, and onwards to the seaside resort of Costa Teguise….
Clem and Janice Clement had travelled separately from Scotland, so it was a chance to catch up with old friends, and there was also a large contingent representing Women Running Penarth. Saturday dawned bright and sunny (there’s a surprise) but a fairly stiff breeze was blowing in along the coastal route, which one of our group described as “like running through a hair dryer”! First off were the Marathon runners, with Beth Apglyn our first finisher in 4:08:17, followed in by Julie Broughton 4:27:55, Lisa Cleary 4:29:35, Yvonne Williams 4:51:56 (3rd in her Age Category, excellent work!) and Steve New 5:08:20. Mandy Barrington got to halfway in 2:37:35 before calling it a day (apologies if I got that wrong, Mandy!) Our non-running snapper for these photos was Debbie Williams (thanks Deb)….
Next starters were the Half marathoners, and pride of place goes to Ben Butler-Madden with a wonderfully metronomic, even-paced run (1:20:55) securing 6th place overall and a brilliant 1st in his Age Category. Ben was followed in by Clem Clement 1:44:37 (6th in Age Category), Bev Warburton 2:06:39, Janice Clement 2:08:22 (3rd in Age Category), Kath Peterson 2:13:46, Tania Miranda 2:18:13, Sarah Pope 2:25:12, Debbie Rees 2:33:19, Nigel Adams and Emma Shumack, both on 2:44:45. Finally off were the 10k runners, which I have to say sounds just about right for running through a hair dryer…Jeanette Ward and Lynne Evans together on 1:07:38, and Cath Pearce 1:33:52. Full results for all races can be found here.
(Ben seen here on the 2nd step of the podium, as the other runners were Age Category winners in the Marathon and 10k!)
Of course when running races in such warm weather it is important to rehydrate, so our athletes made sure they presented themselves early to the “Hydration Stations”….and apparently they continued the “Hydration Program” well into the night! 🍸🍷🍺
Meanwhile back in freezing South Wales, the usual suspects were knocking out parkruns in atrocious conditions.
Barry Island: 20th Melissa Smith 25:10, which was also good enough for 3rd Lady home
Grangemoor: 15th Chris Herdman 21:56, 23rd Gareth Davies 23:13 (great running in the conditions, only 5 secs outside his PB), 27th Peter Trott 23:28, 56th Arabella Calder 27:10, 61st Cam Large 27:34, 82nd Tim Monckton 30:01
Have just found the results for our guys did representing South Wales in the Welsh Inter Regional XC Champs. Well done to Gary Brown 30th in 38:39 (10th MM35), Cath Barker 69th in 33:26 (21st MW35) and Helen Griffiths 113th in 39:41 (32nd MW35). Gary anchored the South MM35 team to a brilliant 1st place, and the South also won the overall title as Inter Regional Champions 2018. Results here.
And on Sunday the traditional Christmas Pudding Race took place at Merthyr Mawr, home of the iconic “Big Dipper” sand dune….lots of running through sand and streams (rivers?) I’m told. Our finishers in a field of 576 runners were as follows: 152nd Chris Nellins 64:09, 249th Louise Hunt 71:27, 292nd Madeleine Attridge 76:08, 492nd Sarah Patnett. Full results can be found here. Well done all of you and especially our very own Elf competitor….
