Weekend Roundup 3-4 Nov 2018

04 Nov Weekend Roundup 3-4 Nov 2018

This weekend was dominated by two events: the eagerly-awaited “mashup” of Barry Island and Billericay parkrunners to create a unique “Gavin & Stacey parkrun”, and the “Richard Burton” 10k….show business luvvies must have been in 7th heaven!

Firstly, can we give a big shout-out for our incredibly hard-working Lyn Evans, Club Treasurer and human dynamo? Lyn, along with Ian and Claire Thorne, are the mainstays behind Barry Island parkrun, and they worked together with their opposite numbers at Billericay parkrun in putting together a fun-filled, action-packed event on the Island this weekend. There was huge interest from the media and press, with Lyn standing up for various interviews in the buildup, and even “Smithy” putting up a tweet to his 10 million plus followers!

Not surprisingly there were record attendance figures, with a massive 435 finishers and standing-room only at Marcos. We had two milestone runners…Lisa Cleary has clocked up an impressive 100, and Beth Apglyn has done 50…well done ladies, and thank you for sharing your cake and bubbly stuff. And parkrun being parkrun, we had Gavin & Stacey characters (best of the bunch being our very own Debbie ‘Nessa’ Rees) mixed in with assorted ghouls and goblins celebrating Halloween (slightly late….), and some of our members running with their kids. Full results below with the other parkruns from around the country (and the world, in Yvonne’s case). The covergirl above is Cath Tailby flying her way to 2nd Woman in a cracking time of 22:19, and here’s a photo montage of a ‘stunning‘ event (credits to Malcolm Bradley, Ben Butler-Madden and Louise Hunt for some of these)….

You can find even more pictures from this memorable event on my Google+ page, and Malcolm’s Flickr page

Phew! On to Sunday, and an intrepid bunch of P & Ders made their way down the M4 to Cwmafan. The Tata Steel Richard Burton 10k road race celebrates the memory of the famous actor who came from this area, and is a proper ‘old school’ roller coaster of a route. We were blessed with some unseasonably mild weather and a big field of 1500+ runners.

Ben Butler-Madden led us all home in a cracking 15th place (chip time 34:46), as ever pursued by Gary Brown in 21st (35:37). Nathan Christoforato continued his rich vein of form with an awesome 42nd and 38:22…just outside his PB on a very undulating course.  The rest of us were as follows….

83rd Jon Ely 40:26, 183rd Frank Atherton 44:23, 255th Malcolm Bradley 47:21 (8th V60+), 308th Gareth Davies 48:49, 327th Lisa Cleary 49:15 (8th V50+), 348th Simon Williamson 49:25 (12th V60+), 686th Bev Warburton 56:19, 740th Mandy Barrington 57:21, 911th Steve Goodfellow 59:06, 1162nd Andrea Goodfellow 64:14.

Two interesting photos were taken after the race by Malcolm’s “assistants”….the first one gives you a clue as to who had a bad run (me and the Mayor)) and the second is a corker for a caption competition involving Frank, Steve and Andrea!

Elsewhere we had individuals doing their own thing in exotic locations. Jon Lewis was continuing his penchant for far-flung marathons in exclusive European destinations with a sortie out to the French Riviera Marathon…and the boy did good, finishing in 4:16:14. The Snowdonia Marathon last week was obviously the ideal preparation, aided by a diet rich in carbs i.e. 8 pints the night before!

Meanwhile Steve New was running in the equally exotic……Merthyr Trail Marathon! Judging by this photo of Steve and the fact he ran 23 of the 26 miles on his own, it looks like an epic adventure…well done that man!

And so finally on to the parkrun results, and a really interesting mix of locations this week, apart from the obvious ones.

Cardiff: 283rd Simon James Grant 25:19 (I’m guessing this is he who goes by the name of Cyrill as well?!)

Worcester Pitchcroft: 163rd Jo Hunt 29:56, 164th Paul Mitchell 29:57

Porthcawl: 4th Mike Morgan 19:44 (remembered his barcode this week!)

Stormont (NI): 42nd Melissa Smith 24:30

Grangemoor: 11th Chris Seal 21:02 (Grangemoor PB, improving every week), 17th Chris Herdman 21:53, 19th Frank Atherton 22:03, 27th Mark Taylor 23:29, 42nd James Buckingham 24:42, 61st Steve Goodfellow 26:13, 112th Andrea Goodfellow 29:47, 123rd Zoe Barber (+bump!) 30:32, 124th Rachel Eales 30:32, 125th Tom Eales 30:33

Ballina Coast (New South Wales): 32nd Yvonne Williams 26:44 (1st in her age category, as usual. Apparently it was a run out to a lighthouse, with dolphins jumping in and out of the nearby surf; no we’re not jealous at all Yvonne!) Here’s an image of a typical Ballina beach…not very different from Barrybados I’d think you’d agree?
