Weekend Roundup (6-7 Oct 2018)

07 Oct Weekend Roundup (6-7 Oct 2018)

Well that’s been a weekend and a half!

Where to start? Okay, close to home…the Cardiff Half Marathon, which this year was doubling up as the Commonwealth Championship race, so lots of fast Africans, Australians and Welshmen (Dewi Griffiths and Kris Jones) running ridiculously fast at the front.  But P & D were up there as well, with our dynamic duo of Ben Butler-Madden and Gary Brown mixing it with the elite boys and girls.

PBs were a-tumbling all over the place, with Nathan Christoforato knocking 3 mins off his course best (3 secs off PB) and both Jon Ely and Kevin Chalke getting well within their target times of 89 and 90 mins respectively.  Yet another great run by Malcolm Bradley, finishing 3rd in the M65 category.  And I’m sure there were some other significant times in there, but what struck me as a spectator was the fun you lot were having out there…Steve Goodfellow caught some great images which are compiled below (thanks Steve!)

The provisional results can be found at the TDL Event website, but I’ve extracted our club results below.  Some extras not posted as P & D were Matthew Slugg 1:53:37, Madeline Attridge 1:54:49, Julie Broughton 1:56:33, Steve New 1:58:53, Emma Healy (Shumack) 2:30:59 and Sarah Patnett 2:37:04.

Now while all this was going on close to home, we had three intrepid ladies representing P & D (and Wales, of course!) in the Chicago Marathon.

Lisa Cleary was ticking off another “Major” marathon, and took the opportunity to mix with Welsh “marathon royalty” when she spotted Steve Jones (ex marathon WR holder) at the expo.  “Oh and that lady chatting to you, Steve, can she take the photo?”  Just so happens that the lady was Constantina Dita, the Gold Medallist from the 2008 Beijing Olympics!

Beth Apglyn had a nightmare journey getting to Chicago, with her American Airlines flight cancelled and so eventually arriving nearly a day and half late.  But Beth didn’t waste any time trying to outdo Lisa in the celebrity selfie stakes…..

Meanwhile Andrea Hurman was quietly getting ready for the race, and like a “stealth assassin” she timed her effort to perfection to beat the other two.

Andrea Hurman 3:49:02

Beth Apglyn 3:54:08 (new PB) and  great report here

Lisa Cleary 3:54:32

Lisa had the last laugh, getting a prime time shot on American TV……

Well done girls….cheers!

Quietly doing his own thing in the City of Spires was Dave Matthews, competing in the Oxford Half Marathon.  Dave has been benefitting from Tempo Tuesdays, and produced (what I believe is) a fine PB run of 1:38:03.

With all this excitement going on far and wide, there was still good old parkrun attracting a fair few members out on a wet and quite cold Saturday morning.

Barry IslandMelissa Smith finished 23rd in 24:16 and smashed her PB by 29 seconds. Ian Warburton was 38th in 25:42.

Grangemoor…first finisher again was Freddie Brown 5th in 19:29.  Followed in by Chris Herdman 17th in 21:43, Simon Williamson 22nd (1st M60-64) in 22:26, Cath Barker 26th in 22:56, Louise Hunt 27th in 23:02, Mark Taylor 36th in 24:32, Steve Goodfellow 54th in 26:32 and Andrea Goodfellow 74th in 28:47.

PorthcawlMike Morgan ran strongly to finish 6th in 19:13, which I believe is a parkrun PB by 13 secs.

HastingsJanice Clement ran 25:18 for 109th.

GunnersburyJames Buckingham finished 172nd in 24:51.

AberdareDebbie Williams finished 62nd in 51:12. It should be noted that Deb was doing a fine job as Tail Walker at this one!

Phew, what a weekend!
