Barry Island 10k road race (5th August 2018)

20 Aug Barry Island 10k road race (5th August 2018)

It’s been a long time since Barry Island has hosted a high quality road race.  Those of you with very good memories might recall there was a 4.4 mile race around the Island held in the depths of winter back in the 80s.  My training diary from 29th December 1985 states that the race was won by Nigel Adams (Swansea Harriers) in 20:52 and I finished 30th in 23:15, from a field of 300 finishers….and it was flipping freezing out there!

Fast forward to 5th August 2018 and things are a bit different, although the race was still won by a Swansea Harrier (Dewi Griffiths).  Some big money backing from Brecon Carreg and the Run 4 Wales 10k Race Series ensured a quality field, interesting course and a large entry of well over 2500 (there were 2651 finishers).  Another big difference from the original race…the weather!  Beautifully warm day, although I heard it was slightly blowy out on exposed bits of the course.

Penarth & Dinas had an impressive 22 finishers, and some great performance in there, too.  Pride of place goes to Cath Barker, who came 1st in the F40+ category in a speedy 44:13.

As ever, Gary Brown and Ben Butler-Madden battled out the M35+ category, 4th and 5th repectively in 34:59 & 35:52.

Likewise in the F50+ category we had some excellent performances, with Andrea Hurman 4th in 47:54, and Lisa Cleary 5th in 49:02.

Malcolm Bradley is going through a rich vein of form at the moment, and finished an impressive 4th in the M65+ category in 46:15.

Beth Apglyn had an eventful day out here….not only did she finish 17th in the Women’s Open race in a highly respectable 47:59, but she also snook in before Iwan Thomas (ex International track runner) to up his sponsorship target for Welsh children’s charity Ty Hafen, as he pledged £10 for every runner (281 of them) that beat him to the line.

But full kudos to everyone in P & D Runners who competed out there…not an easy course, but possibly not as hilly as it could be in Barry!  Hopefully it will return next year and become a regular feature of the Welsh summer road race season.

Full results can be found at the TDL website, but I’ve also produced a tailored version below to show our club’s finishers….
